WHAT’S NEW

  • NEW ANNUAL DIGITAL RIGHTS REPORT 2021: Online Intimidation: Controlling the Narrative in the Balkans

Nearly 800 cases of digital rights violations in eight countries of south-eastern Europe were recorded by BIRN and SHARE Foundation. Hate speech continues to thrive, journalists and vulnerable groups are systematically targeted in the online realm, and the presence of fake news does not decline. You can read more about it in blog post here and the report is available here.

CROATIA
ABOUT US

B.a.B.e. Be active. Be emancipated. is a non-governmental human rights organisation founded in 1994.

Its main area of expertise is the promotion and protection of women’s rights, particularly when it comes to combating gender-based violence.

The organisation has rich experience in providing victim support services at a national level and advocacy for human rights, which has resulted in legislation improvements (the most recent example is the criminalisation of “revenge pornography” in Croatia ).

B.a.B.e. have been implementing European projects and coordinating numerous partners for many years, with an interdisciplinary staff trained in project management, advocacy and victim support.

OUR CONTENT/PROJECT/ETC WE THINK IS RELEVANT FOR THE NETWORK

Since March 2021 We have been implementing a project SURF and SOUND aimed at combating gender-based online violence (cyber violence), which is co-financed by European union.

The main objective of the project is to actively raise awareness about online violence against women (among professionals, stakeholders and general public) and form mechanisms of its prevention and suppression (creating an online platformNEON – No to online violence – to provide information and promote reporting), but also providing free legal and psychological support for victims .

In order to provide more security and power to the victims of “revenge porn” B.a.B.e. became a Global partner of stopncii.org , a new platform operated by SWGfL and developed with Meta which helps protect people threatened with the sharing of intimate images without consent on social media (Facebook and Instagram) and other platforms.

WHAT IS OUR SUPERPOWER?

B.a.B.e. super power is support and influence – providing legal and psychological support as well as Women’s Shelter to approximately 2.000 beneficiaries per year and influence over Croatian society and institutional stakeholders.

SERBIA
ABOUT US

The Lawyers’ Committee For Human Rights (YUCOM) was founded in 1997 as an expert NGO whose members are legal experts engaged in promoting and advocating for the rule of law, human rights, raising public awareness, providing legal assistance to victims of human rights violations, as well as developing cooperation with national and international organizations involved in human rights protection and promotion. YUCOM is renowned as an organization advocating for human rights and promoting the active participation of citizens through legal initiatives. It has profiled itself and gained much recognition as a human rights defender organization.

OUR CONTENT/PROJECT/ETC WE THINK IS RELEVANT FOR THE NETWORK

YUCOM has been working in the field of freedom of speech online, covering both sides of the coin, the protection of free speech, and the prosecution of hate speech. We have been providing legal representation to activists, who, due to their opinions expressed online, have been the targets of government prosecution, as well as to those who have faced anonymous threats and intimidation online. For the past two years, we have been documenting attacks and pressures against human rights defenders, most of which happen online, and publishing an annual report.

WHAT IS OUR SUPERPOWER?

YUCOM’s superpower is the ability to bolt into action at a moment’s notice to defend fellow activists apprehended by the police.
